As is well known, she was arrested as an opposition politician in Belarus in 2020 and sentenced to a long prison sentence. She is currently a prisoner in a Belarusian prison camp. Meanwhile, the Belarusian democracy movement was brutally intimidated and silenced. The war in Ukraine further worsened the situation, and Masha was severely abused in its shadow, leaving her in a life-threatening health situation. Therefore, it is more important than ever to keep her memory alive in the public eye.
mem.cont.act will remember Masha and draw attention to her situation and the local political situation at Wilhelmsplatz in Stuttgart through a temporary installation that will remain on site from April 28, 23 to September 9, 23, and regular performative activities. This happens in the following way:
Following her abduction, a rally took place at the Upper Palace Garden on September 19, 2020. The location is centrally located and within sight of the HMDK, thereby connecting Mascha with important cultural locations in Stuttgart. Here, a meeting place is created around a portrait measuring approximately 4 x 4 m, where those interested can leave their own traces in the form of text, drawings, etc. using weatherproof material provided. These reflections, comments, wishes, visions and perceptions on the part of the audience become part of the installation and manifest themselves in an open work of art that invites communication and creates a forum for self-efficacy for the participants. This communication process extends over the entire project period and brings together the ideas and perceptions of people who do not necessarily have to be present at the same time. The context created in this way has a reinforcing and clarifying effect on the participants and activates their own willingness to act. Through the installed audience contributions, the space continues to develop and invites reflection on the social spaces of a future society.
mem.cont.act is in the tradition of arte útil. This independent genre actively integrates artistic action into concrete social processes, but without abandoning the aesthetic methodology. In this way, mem.cont.act also follows Mascha Kalesnikava's own attitude, who combined music and life with the greatest of ease and lived art as an active intervention in reality, even if at a certain point she decided to switch to a political form of action decided.
mem.cont.act wird am 28.4.23, kurz nach dem Geburtstag von Mascha Kalesnikava, mit einem Konzert und Redebeiträgen eröffnet. Zu signifikanten Terminen wie dem Jahrestag ihrer Verhaftung finden weitere Konzerte und Gesprächsveranstaltungen statt. In Kooperation mit der HMDK Stuttgart wird der Ort durch regelmäßige studentische Kurzbeiträge engmaschig aktiviert. Geplant ist eine tägliche musikalisch-literarische Mahnwache, die von Prof. Klaus Dreher betreut wird. Das Projekt als solches sowie ausgewählte Veranstaltungen werden dokumentiert und in einen nota space transformiert. nota ist eine 3-D-Online Plattform, in der interdisziplinäre Arbeit, eigenständige Kunstwerke und kreative Archive gestaltet werden können. Durch ihren hierarchiefreien Aufbau und ihre strukturelle Offenheit ist nota bestens geeignet, als strukturierendes Element an sozialen Prozessen und interdisziplinären Experimenten mitzuwirken. Der so entstehende Online Space ist interaktiv und ermöglicht seinen Nutzern individuelle Erfahungsmöglichkeiten von mem.cont.act im virtuellen Raum. Dies ist grundsächlich von jedem Ort der Welt aus möglich und wird auch über den Projektzeitraum hinaus dauerhaft verfügbar bleiben. Im Rahmen des Projektes wird der mem.cont.act nota space durch Laptops, die z.B. in unseren Partnerinstitutionen HMDK und Kunstraum 34 bei ausgewählten Veranstaltungen im Projektzeitraum installiert sein werden, zugänglich gemacht. Solche Satelliten repräsentieren Maschas Anwesenheit als Künstlerin in unterschiedlichen Stuttgarter Kultureinrichtungen. Bei der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit wird mem.cont.act vom S-K-A-M e.V. und dem Projekt freemascha.org sowie belarusischen Aktivisten unterstützt. Eine Sendung im SWR Fernsehen ist ebenfalls in Planung.
Zwei Jahre nach ihrer Verhaftung und in einer veränderten politischen Landschaft wirkt mem.cont.act daran mit, daß Mascha Kalesnikava, die sich als Politikerin und Künstlerin für die Freiheit anderer einsetzte, im Bewusstsein der Öffentlichkeit verankert bleibt. Durch Zusammenarbeiten mit Amnesty International, die in diesem Kontext bereits stattgefunden haben wissen wir, daß für sie selbst öffentliches Interesse eine Schutzwirkung besitzt, die nicht zu unterschätzen ist, auch wenn wir nicht in der Lage sind sie zu befreien. Zu dieser Schutzwirkung möchte mem.cont.act einen Beitrag leisten.
