NIKOLA LUTZ

GraphicSound

Since 2006, Nikola Lutz has been exploring the connections between visual and auditory perception through the GraphicSound series. In this series, musical graphics are employed as a means of creating form for improvisation. To date, nine collections of graphic scores and three vinyl objects have been created. The graphics are based on a multi-stage creative process. First, details from photographs are enlarged and the resulting structures are translated into abstract, hand-drawn forms.

GraphicSound is an improvisational concept featuring graphic scores for variable ensembles. The symbolic yet non-unambiguous coding of the graphics creates a focus on open-ended material, channelling the improvisational development of music without determining it. The individual graphics constitute a score that varies in form; they are a collection of semi-transparent sheets of the same format that can be rearranged and layered in ever-changing ways. The non-hierarchical simultaneity of visual and acoustic perception is the formative force behind the piece. GraphicSound takes musicians and listeners into the borderland between control and complete freedom.

The series also includes visually modified vinyl objects from which various constellations can be generated and used as musical graphics.
